Warner Bros. Pictures and DC’s “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” is on track for a soft $30 million opening weekend at the domestic box office, following $3.4 million in Thursday previews.
The $125 million budget movie is reportedly headed for an $11 million haul on Friday, including that preview fee. Going into the week, the film was expected to have a domestic debut of around $35-40 million. It won’t hit those numbers now.
The first “Shazam” made $5.9 million in Thursday previews before opening with $53.5 million for its three-day run in April 2019, eventually grossing $366 million worldwide.
The movie has been a dud with critics, its Rotten Tomatoes score dropping to just 53% (5.8/10). However, the audience is higher on the movie at 84%, which is similar to the first movie.
Despite the reviews, “Shazam” is expected to beat last week’s box office king “Scream VI”, which is expected to drop 62% to around $17 million. “Creed III” is likely to be third with $15 million, followed by “65” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” competing for fourth and fifth place with $5.3 million each.
The movie will also premiere worldwide this weekend with reports suggesting a $50 million overseas haul, but if it follows the domestic path, it will come in significantly lower.
