Evan Brown started 24 games for the Lions in the last two years, but after signing a free transfer with the Seahawks, he will be vying for a job first.
Nearly minutes after news broke that former Lions third-round pick Graham Glasgow was returning to Detroit, a related domino fell. Detroit lions free agent guard/center Evan Brown signs with the Seattle Seahawks, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Contract terms are not yet known.
Brown has been the team’s main back-up center for the past two seasons and played the role quite well in 2021 when he had to take over for the injured Frank Ragnow. That year he achieved a PFF mark of 66.8 in 12 starts. The Lions were then lucky enough to bring him back in 2022 on a one-year contract, and Brown again had to start 12 games for Detroit, this time replacing right guard Halapoulivaati Vaitai. Brown wasn’t quite as successful when he was center stage, but it was enough for him to drum up a sizable market for this free agency.
Brown’s versatility and center starting skills will be a nice addition to a Seahawks offensive line that finished in the bottom half of the league in both run and pass blocking degrees.
Meanwhile, Glasgow is likely to replace Brown as Detroit’s primary low, though it remains to be seen what Detroit will do with Vaitai’s bloated contract, which currently takes up $12.4 million in cap space. It is entirely possible that the contract will be restructured, Vaitai will take a pay cut, or he could still be released.
Anyway, the Lions have quite a bit of depth and Brown finds a new home.
Brown becomes the third Lions free agent to agree terms elsewhere, joining running back Jamaal Williams (Saints) and safety DeShon Elliott (Dolphins).
